Red shield bug
The Red shield bug (Carpocoris mediterraneus), also known as the Mediterranean stink bug or skull shield-bug, belongs to the genus Carpocoris, in the order Hemiptera and Rhynchota, the suborder true bugs (Heteroptera), the infraorder Pentatomomorpha, the superfamily Pentatomoidea, the family Pentatomidae, the subfamily Pentatominae and the tribe Carpocorini. Carpocoris mediterraneus atlanticus is a subspecies of this bug.

The red shield bug is particularly prevalent in the Mediterranean region, as far north as Austria, and as far east as Iran.

Adults reach body lengths of 11-13 mm. Their upper body surface is brightly coloured (yellow and orange) and pitted. Between these indentations the surface is ‘wrinkled’. There are 4 longitudinal black stripes on the upper surface of the pronotum the inner two of which converge. The scutellum has 5 dark spots. These insects are unusually shield-like in shape.

The antennae are dark and have 5 segments, the first of which is brownish. The tapered side edges of the first chest segment are particularly striking. The wing covers (elytra) are very thick. Due to their appearance, Carpocoris mediterraneus can be confused with Carpocoris pudicus, Carpocoris purpureipennis or Carpocoris fuscispinus. The red shield bug is found on flowering plants, particularly on parsley.
