Metal mark moths - Choreutidae
Metal mark moths - Choreutidae

Metal mark moths
The metal mark moths (Choreutidae) are a family in the order Lepidoptera, the suborder Glossata, the infraorder Heteroneura (unranked: Ditrysia), the section Tineina, the subsection Sesiina and the superfamily Choreutoidea. In the past, the Choreutidae belonged to the family Glyphipterigidae. Their assignment to the superfamily Sesioidea is also outdated.
There are approximately 400 species of metal mark moths worldwide, 17 of which occur in Europe, 12 in Central Europe. They belong to 3 subfamilies: Brentiinae, Choreutinae and Millierinae. The Brentiinae, which includes around 70 species, live in the Nearctic, in Australia and South Asia. The Choreutinae, with around 290 species, are found in the Holarctic and pantropical region, while the Millierinae, comprising only 3 species, are found in Europe, Florida and Chile.
Among the 19 genera of metal mark moths are: Millieria, Phormoestes, Nyx, Brenthia (Syn.: Microaethia, Litobrenthia), Anthophila, Asterivora, Caloreas, Choreutis (Syn.: Choreutidia), Hemerophila (Syn.: Allononyma), Melanoxena, Peotyle, Prochoreutis, Rhobonda, Saptha (Syn.: Badera, Chordates), Tebenna (Syn.: Porpe), Telosphrantis, Tortyra (Syn.: Choregia, Walsinghamia) and Zodia.
Some examples of species of metal mark moths are: Anthophila fabriciana, Anthophila abhasica, Anthophila threnodes, Choreutis diana, Choreutis nemorana, Choreutis pariana, Prochoreutis holotoxa, Prochoreutis myllerana, Prochoreutis sehestediana, Prochoreutis solaris, Prochoreutis stellaris, Prochoreutis ultimana, Tebenna bjerkandrella, Tebenna chingana, Tebenna micalis, Tebenna pretiosana und Millieria dolosalis.
